Santurtzi Bilbao Port

How to get from Bilbao port to the city centre

Arriving by ferry in Bilbao? Then your holiday is just about to begin. But what’s the best way to get from the ferry terminal in Santurtzi to the lively heart of the city? Good news: it’s surprisingly easy, and you’ve got several options – whether you’re travelling with your own vehicle or prefer public transport.

Where exactly do you arrive?

Ferries operated by Brittany Ferries dock in Santurtzi, a port town just outside Bilbao. The terminal is located at the mouth of the Nervión River, around 15 to 20 minutes by car from the city centre. It’s a perfect starting point for exploring both Bilbao and the wider Basque Country.

Option 1: With your own car

If you’re travelling with your own vehicle, you’ll be in the city in no time. From the port, simply follow signs for Bilbao Centro. The route mostly follows the A-8 or N-644 motorway, and you can drive into the city centre in around 20 minutes.

  • Tip: Parking in Bilbao is relatively easy in underground car parks. Popular locations include the ones near the Guggenheim Museum and Plaza Moyúa.

Option 2: Taxi or VTC (Uber/Bolt)

No car? No problem. Taxis are usually available when ferries arrive in Santurtzi. A ride to the city centre costs around €20 to €25 and takes about 20 minutes. Services like Uber and Bolt also operate in Bilbao and can be slightly cheaper.

Option 3: Metro (cheap and efficient)

Not in a rush and fancy a more local experience? The Bilbao Metro is a great option. From the port, it’s about a 15-minute walk to Santurtzi Station (Line 2). From there, take the train towards Kabiezes → Basauri.

Useful stops include:

  • Abando: central station and shopping
  • Moyúa: the city centre, close to the Guggenheim
  • Casco Viejo: the Old Town

The journey takes around 25 to 30 minutes and costs less than £2.

Option 4: Cycling or walking?

Technically, you could cycle into the city, either with a folding bike or a rented e-bike. The port is connected to the city via a riverside cycle path, though it’s about 15 km and not ideal if you’re carrying luggage. Still, if you travel light and want to explore Bilbao actively, it’s a fun alternative.

Let your holiday begin

Whichever option you choose, you’ll be in the heart of Bilbao within 30 minutes, ready to enjoy pintxos, culture and the dramatic Basque landscape. Whether you opt for comfort (car or taxi), convenience (metro), or a bit of adventure (bike), Bilbao is closer than you might think the moment you disembark.
