Bilbao might just be one of the most surprising cities in Spain. Located in the heart of the Basque Country, this city combines impressive architecture with rich culture, fantastic gastronomy and a relaxed atmosphere.
Whether you arrive by ferry from England or Ireland, Bilbao is a perfect destination for a city trip or as a starting point for your journey through northern Spain.
1. Visit the Guggenheim Museum

If there is one place you should not miss, it is the world-famous Guggenheim Museum. The building alone, designed by Frank Gehry, is a work of art in itself. Inside you will find top-level modern and contemporary art. Make sure to take a walk outside as well, past the gigantic Puppy made of flowers and the spider sculpture by Louise Bourgeois.
2. Walk through the old town, Casco Viejo

Bilbao’s atmospheric old town is full of character. Narrow streets, lively squares and plenty of tapas bars where you can try delicious pintxos. Be sure to visit the Gothic Cathedral of Santiago and stop by the covered Ribera Market, one of the largest food markets in Europe.
3. Take the funicular to Artxanda

Would you like to admire Bilbao from above? Take the funicular to Artxanda. At the top you will have a beautiful view over the city and the Nervión River. Tip: go just before sunset for a magical experience.
4. Taste pintxos at Plaza Nueva

Plaza Nueva is a cosy, rectangular square in Casco Viejo with arcades full of pintxos bars. This is where true Basque life comes to life. Order a glass of txakoli, the local white wine, and enjoy the wide variety of small bites. It is easy to spend an entire evening here.
5. Visit the Museo de Bellas Artes
Fans of classical art should not miss the Museo de Bellas Artes. Here you will find works by El Greco, Goya and other Spanish masters, along with modern art and temporary exhibitions. It is a perfect balance to the modern Guggenheim.
6. Take a boat trip on the Nervión River

The river is the lifeline of Bilbao and a boat trip gives you a different perspective of the city. You will sail under iconic bridges and learn more about the history and harbour of Bilbao along the way.
7. Explore the Zubizuri Bridge and modern architecture

Bilbao is known for its modern urban development. The Zubizuri Bridge by Santiago Calatrava is one of the most striking structures. It is a white pedestrian bridge with a glass floor and a graceful arch design. Combine it with a walk along the revitalised riverside promenade.
8. Relax in Doña Casilda Park
After all the culture, it is nice to find a bit of green. In Doña Casilda Park you will find fountains, a duck pond and plenty of shady spots to relax. Ideal for a picnic or a quiet break during the day.
9. Discover the Mercado de la Ribera
For food lovers, this market is a delight. It is not just a place to shop but also to eat. Try local cheeses, seafood or simply enjoy a good coffee with a view of the river.
10. Take a day trip to the coast or inland

Bilbao is close to both the coast and the Basque countryside. Popular trips include the surf town of Getxo or the dramatic San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, known as a filming location for Game of Thrones. You can get there in less than an hour by car.
