Bilbao might just be one of the most surprising city break destinations in Spain. The city effortlessly combines modern architecture with Basque tradition, lively streets with peaceful green hills. And the best part? You do not need a big budget to fully enjoy this vibrant and versatile city.
In this blog, we share our favourite affordable, and even free, things to do in Bilbao – perfect for travellers arriving by ferry and looking to explore smartly.
- Tip: Travel as cheaply as possible from England to Bilbao by ferry, either from Portsmouth or from Ireland via Rosslare.
Walk along the Nervión River

One of the best ways to get to know Bilbao is simply to walk along the river. Start at the Zubizuri Bridge (the striking white pedestrian bridge designed by Santiago Calatrava) and follow the riverside promenade towards the Guggenheim Museum. Along the way you will pass art installations, cafés, skate parks and fountains. It is completely free and perfect for taking photos.
Free outdoor art at the Guggenheim

Although the Guggenheim Museum charges an entrance fee, you can admire many iconic artworks outside the building for free. Look out for Puppy, the giant flower-covered dog, and the impressive spider Maman by Louise Bourgeois. The exterior of the museum itself is already a masterpiece.
Explore the narrow streets of Casco Viejo

Bilbao’s Old Town, known as Casco Viejo, is a colourful maze of alleyways, squares and pintxo bars. Stroll through the Siete Calles (Seven Streets), admire historic buildings, pop into small boutiques and simply enjoy the atmosphere. You do not need to spend anything to soak up the lively vibe – though it will be hard to resist trying a pintxo or two.
Take the Artxanda funicular for city views

For just a few euros, you can take the Artxanda Funicular up to one of Bilbao’s best viewpoints. At the top you will be treated to fantastic panoramic views across the city. A perfect outing for the morning or around sunset. Also read our blog: Taking the Funicular in Bilbao.
Visit Mercado de la Ribera
This indoor market is a feast for the senses. You will find fresh produce, small tapas bars and a lively mix of locals and visitors. Browsing is free, but for just a few euros you can enjoy a delicious pintxo or a good coffee with river views.
Free museums and budget-friendly culture
Bilbao offers several museums with free entry on certain days or times:
- Museo de Bellas Artes: free entry on Wednesdays
- Museo Vasco (Basque Museum): often free on Sunday afternoons
Check the opening times in advance and plan your visits accordingly.
Picnic in Doña Casilda Park

Escape the city bustle and enjoy a picnic in Bilbao’s green heart. Doña Casilda Park, next to the Museum of Fine Arts, is a lovely place for a break, surrounded by fountains, peacocks and beautiful garden displays.
Cheap public transport
Bilbao has an excellent metro and tram system. Buying a Barik Card (a rechargeable public transport card) makes travelling around even cheaper and easier. Perfect for visiting several places without relying on expensive taxis.
Whether you are staying in Bilbao for a few days or combining the city with a road trip through the Basque Country, there is plenty to see and do without spending a fortune. Bilbao proves that culture, great food and stunning views do not have to come with a high price tag.
